September is usually one of my favorite months in the turning world. The Mid‑Ohio Pen Turner’s Gathering brings together so many familiar faces, passionate makers, and new turners eager to learn. It’s a show I look forward to every year—not just for the pens, blanks, and tools, but for the conversations, the laughs, and the sense of community that makes this craft so special.

This year, though, my September weekend looks a little different.

A Different Kind of Relay

The same weekend as the Gathering, I’ll be trading my booth setup for running shoes. I’m part of a relay team in the Akron Marathon, and our race falls right on top of the show dates. It’s a commitment I made earlier in the year, and I’m excited to take on the challenge with my team. Running has been a big part of my personal goals over the last several years, and being able to participate in the marathon—especially here in Akron—means a lot.

Even though I won’t be at the Gathering in person, I’ll definitely be thinking about everyone who’s there, sharing tips, swapping blanks, and enjoying the weekend. The Mid‑Ohio Pen Turner’s Gathering has always been a highlight for me, and missing it this year isn’t easy.

A Weekend Promotion for the Community

Because I won’t be able to attend, I still want to make sure customers and supporters have something special to look forward to. I’m planning to run a promotion the same weekend as the show so you can still snag some great deals, pick up new blanks, and enjoy a bit of the Gathering spirit from afar.

Looking Ahead

I fully expect to be at shows in the future. There was just an unfortunate schedule conflict this time. Until then, I’ll be cheering on everyone attending this year’s event—and hopefully crossing a marathon finish line with my relay team.
