Prepping for the Mid-Ohio Pen Turners Gathering: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Cross Cut Creations

The Mid-Ohio Pen Turners Gathering is just around the corner, and if you're as excited as we are, you're probably already counting down the days. This annual event is a highlight for pen turning enthusiasts, bringing together creators, collectors, and craftsmen (and women!) from all over to share their passion for the craft. At Cross Cut Creations, we’re gearing up in a big way, putting in the hours to create unique project blanks that will be available for purchase at the show. Here’s a peek into how we’re preparing and what you can expect from us this year.

Crafting Quality Project Blanks: Our Process

Creating top-notch project blanks is no small feat, and at Cross Cut Creations, we take pride in every step of the process. From selecting the perfect colors to the final touches that make each blank truly one-of-a-kind, our commitment to quality is unwavering. Here's a glimpse into our workflow as we gear up for the gathering:

  1. Selecting the Best Materials: It all starts with choosing the right colors. We carefully select colors, looking for unique patterns and colors. Whether it’s a round bespoke rod, square pen blank, ring blank, knife scale, or bottle stopper, a lot of our standard mixes are available in a variety of blank options.

  2. Design and Cutting: Once the colors are selected, we move on to mixing and pouring. Each blank is mixed and poured in our Cross Cut Creations style. We use the bandsaw and sanders to cut the blanks to size, ensuring each one is consistent and ready for turning.

  3. Stabilization and Resin Casting: For some of our more unique offerings, we stabilize the wood or incorporate resin casting to add that extra wow factor. This not only enhances the appearance but also improves the durability of the final product, making it a joy to turn and use.

  4. Finishing Touches: After cutting and stabilizing, each blank goes through a finishing process where we lacquer it to highlight its natural beauty. We also label each blank with pertinent information, so you know exactly what you're getting (and can order again in the future).

What to Expect at the Show

At the Mid-Ohio Pen Turners Gathering, you’ll find a variety of project blanks from Cross Cut Creations that cater to all skill levels and styles. Whether you’re looking for something classic or a bit more avant-garde, we’ll have something to inspire your next pen project.

  • Exclusive Blanks: We’ve been working on some new blanks that will debut at the show. These pieces will be available while supplies last, so make sure to grab them while you can!

  • Live Demonstrations: In addition to our booth, we’ll also be doing a live demonstration. Robert will be giving a demo on how to turn modified slimlines!

  • Show Specials: Keep an eye out for show specials and bundles. We’re offering some great deals to help you stock up on supplies without breaking the bank.
